About the Artist
I have a strong passion in art which picked up its momentum originally from Sherubtse Public School (present Sherubtse College) where the primary students from Class 1 to 5 were given one art class once a week. The classes constituted copying and drawing of sample images – such as a dragon and the eight lucky signs – drawn on a blackboard by an art teacher who would correct our artwork.
My passion for art further deepened from successful achievements in Class X, (ICSE) Art Exam in 1980. The exam consisted of pencil drawing and sketching of still images of a basketful of fruits and plants. Since then drawing and painting pictures has been at the core of my interest aimed at inspiring art enthusiasts.
The painting process starts from basic sketching and drawing of the subject with the help of Grid Drawing Tool available online. I always use this tool rather than directly copying and drawing the reference images in order to retain the same design, format and shape of the subject especially when enlarging the images on canvas. After image drawing is complete, I first block the major shapes, designs and forms of the subject with acrylic as a first step to laying the foundation of my artwork.
However all the major works of painting are done in oil. I prefer oil over acrylics as it gives me sufficient opportunity to blend the colors and adjust the value and tonality of the painting with its slow drying properties.
My artwork mainly consists of landscapes, portraits, wildlife and other figurative paintings. Every new painting is a new experience of learning for me. I feel I’ve been blessed with a special gift and it’s incredibly satisfying to know that I can bring joy into the lives of others through my paintings.
The medium of my artwork is mainly in oil on canvas. The first oil portrait that I painted was our Royal Couple which was gifted to Their Majesties at their grand wedding ceremony on October 14, 2011.
The main source of inspiration for my ever increasing passion in art is drawn from art masterpieces of the world’s great professional artists that I come across. I meticulously examine these masterpieces and try to replicate their art techniques into my own work.
The saying ‘Practice makes perfect’ is definitely true in art insofar as the great art masters have often stressed on the three main underlying words, “”PRACTICE, PRACTICE,PRACTICE!!!””
